Braziliaans acteur, producent en regisseur. Ster van een groot aantal Braziliaanse films uit de bloeitijd van de Cinema Novo, waaronder de internationale hit Dona Flor e seus dois maridos/Dona Flor and her Two Husbands (tegenover Sonia Braga; Bruno Barreto, 1976) en, top-billed als Lorde Cigano, in Bye Bye Brasil (competitie Cannes; Carlos Diegues, 1980).

Oorspronkelijk radio-omroeper en maker van politiek geëngageerd theater. Filmdebuut in A falecida/The Death (Leon Hirszman, 1965).
